Bonnland, located near Hammelburg in Lower Franconia, was first mentioned in 802 as “Bonlante.” Over time, it grew into a small village, later surrounded by military training grounds.
Used as a POW camp in both World Wars, the site held thousands of prisoners, many forced into labor. In 1938, the Nazi Army cleared the village to expand the training area, relocating around 280 residents.
Some briefly returned after WWII, but in 1965 the Bundeswehr fully took over. Since then, Bonnland has remained sealed off as a military training village?intact but uninhabited.
Many buildings are now protected, including the 13th-century St. Michaelis Church. Today, the empty streets reflect the silence of a community long gone.
